Florals Gradation Day

Well I really and truly did it! What a journey!
Holy cow am I grateful for this experience. Some of it was long and arduous, but the majority of it was absolutely fantastic, in a get out of your comfort zone, stretch and grow sort of way!
What a challenging and fantastic program this is. There is truly nothing like it in the world. We just got thrown right into the deep end of the pool and we learned to swim!

So all week people were asking, “What are we painting on Friday?”
Doug always answered, “White flowers in a white pot, and you are painting on your own.”
…and everytime I would laugh and be like, “..and held by a polar bear in a blizzard hahaha!”
At the end of class yesterday I finally realized he was not joking.
All artists know that white objects are the hardest to paint because they are usually painted with anything but white.
Well, long story short, since I thrive on challenges, I decided to paint two paintings at once.

This is a Doug composition.

And this is an original Sherry Pence. I have been anxious to put my new skills to the test and I think I accomplished what I set out to do.
Mind you, orchids are about the only flower we didn’t learn how to paint so I had to teach myself in about 45 minutes.
Yay! I did a thing!

Thank you for joining me in this journey. It’s been a great chapter in my life!

Florals Week 3 Day 1

Wearing my Bob and Peapod shirt.

I don’t know what it is about Mondays but I just felt blah today.

Anyhow, this is the first painting of the day.  I was so thankful for something different than the standard liquid opal we’ve been using. I know what you’re thinking, “liquid opal” sounds nice, am I right?

Trust me it’s nowhere near as cool as it sounds.  I thought it would be this magical opalescent medium. Nope. It’s basically liquid white tinted grayish lavender.  That’s it, that’s all.

Moving on,

I quite enjoyed the second painting of the day.  I made an error of judgement and placed my floral elements too high so I was left with a big empty spot at the bottom of the canvas. I didn’t feel like covering it with leaves and such as we usually do so I decided to throw a vase in. I was the only one in class to do this, so yeah,  this girl is doing her own thang!

I’ve never painted “glass” before so I winged it. I did get a pointer or two from my instructor, but little did I know that we are actually painting a glass vase tomorrow, so it will be very interesting to see how badly I messed up today.

Florals Week 2 Day 5

Rocking the favorite CRI shirt. Everyone seems to love this one, and why not? It’s awesome sauce!

Today marks the end of a successful week. Florals is going by lightning fast and at the same time, the paintings I did a couple days ago feel like I did them months ago. Weird.

I definitely enjoyed this painting today! I’m getting more confident with my brushstrokes and getting those flips, frills and folds in the petals to work.
Really looking forward to the next and final week!

Florals W2D4

It might be hard to see in this photo, but the letters B.O.B. contain one of my paintings.

I love this shirt!

This painting was a lot of fun and it was relatively simple. This might be one of the firsts that I will teach.

This was a pretty involved painting. I’m not sure that I care too much for poinsettias in general, but it’s all good because the learning continues.

Florals Week 2 Day 2

It’s not new but it is a favorite. I’m wearing the “Mod Bob” T today.

I decided to paint on my own last night to try and counter all the pink pink pink we’ve been painting.
I came up with this, it has it’s issues but I guess it’ll do for my very first personal floral composition.
It’s a nice change of color to be sure.

So as I said in yesterday’s post, today was all about roses.
This was a great visual exercise to examine the anatomy of a rose.

…and with painting number 2, we put our lesson into practice.

I hope you are enjoying my journey. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.
Tomorrow will be full of new surprises.

Florals Week 2 Day 1

I’ve got the Monday blues today. In spite of that, I was still able to complete two paintings.

Little old lady painting #1. This painting was mainly a review of last weeks techniques.

Old lady painting #2
We learned to paint rose petals today. You can see the progression from the top flower to the bottom flower. We started with a poppy-like flower and progressed to a rose-like flower.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful by calling this style “old lady”.
It’s just that this is exactly the kind of painting my grandmother would go bonkerballs for.
The color scheme and style reminds me of the 80’s for some reason.
Anyhow, it’s excellent for learning and teaching but I can tell you for certain, this is NOT my aesthetic….at all.
Tomorrow is going to be all roses roses roses, so stay tuned!
